Del Mar Hills Academy ended its first week of school in 2010 with a musical performance by the first and fourth graders on Jan. 8.
First graders celebrated their learning of the international cultures of Mexico, Japan and South Africa by singing traditional songs, led by music teacher Arah Allard. With the help of art teacher Nicole Nelson they painted a beautiful set in a Japanese method that uses closing doors and sliding panels.
The fourth graders followed, performing on their recorders. Since the Hills opened, each student has been given the opportunity to learn how to read music and play an instrument with the recorder. The students learn with "Recorder Karate" earning colored belts for their musical accomplishments.
