Training halted after hole found on Del Mar track

Only hours after the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club's 71st season of horse began, training had to be halted due to a hole in track's surface.

But track officials said they expected repairs to be made before the start of today's races at 2 p.m., according to signonsandiego.com

On Wednesday, the season took off with the traditional showiness, a victory by the Twirling Candy, the largest crowd in Del Mar History — and of course the "One and Only Truly Fabulous Hats Contest.'' A total of 45,309 came through the turnstyles.

The Craig Family Trust's horse, took the $112,500 Oceanside Stakes for 3-year-olds two years to the day after Sid Craig's death. Jenny Craig and family members were on hand to see jockey Joel Rosario guide their 4-5 favorite, traverse the mile on the infield grass in 1:34.69.

Hats took center stage before post time as men and women donned headgear in hopes of capturing the title as the most glamorous and the funniest/most outrageous, as well as the headgear with the best racing theme and the best fresh flowers.
