The Powerhouse Park in Del Mar was filled with picnic blankets, lawn chairs and fans of classic rock music on the evening of June 15 to launch the 2010 Twilight Summer Concerts series.
The Los Angeles-based band Mrs. Robinson delighted concert-goers who danced the night away to its covers of Janis Joplin, Grace Slick, Neil Young ... and disco favorites.
Since 1982 the Del Mar Foundation has been organizing summer concerts in the spectacular setting of Powerhouse Park overlooking the ocean in Del Mar. Each year the fan base seems to grow, with happy throngs of people who picnic, dance and sing-along with the music. This year was no exception.
As always, both locals and visitors to the community brought lawn chairs, blankets, picnic dinners, children, grandchildren, dogs and a wine to enjoy with friends and neighbors.
A word to the wise: Come early to get a spot on the grass, and bring your wallet so you can buy a concert season T-shirt and participate in the evening's raffle of gift certificates donated by local businesses and restaurants.
These concerts would not be possible without the financial support of the local sponsors. This year, long-time sponsors the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, as well as the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, are back to provide support. Two restaurants, Poseidon On the Beach and En Fuego Cantina & Grill, and the recently renovated resort hotel and spa, L' Auberge Del Mar, join them in underwriting the four concerts.
Mark your calendars for the remaining three concerts:
- Rockola: 7 p.m. July 20
- The U. K. Beat: 7 p.m. Aug. 17
- Atomic Groove: 5 p.m. Sept. 12
