The Latin Connection, directed by jazz pianist/composer Chase Morrin, will perform a summer concert at at 7 p.m. June 27 at the historical Dizzy's Jazz Club.
The club is downtown at the San Diego Wine Center, Harbor Club Towers Ground Floor, on Second and J streets. These young musicians have earned several national awards in 2010, beginning with the Los Angeles Music Center Spotlight Awards.
Chase Morrin and Daniel Feldman, both seniors at Canyon Crest Academy, auditioned and accompanied each other for the prestigious all Southern California Jazz Instrumentalist Spotlight award at the L.A. Music Center as the Latin Connection Duo. Both musicians began the audition process in October, and both became semifinalists with a second live audition in February.
Morrin became a finalist and competed with another jazz pianist from Los Angeles at the final Spotlight Awards Gala on April 24, held at the Ahmanson Theater in Los Angeles. Morrin won the overall award with a performance of his composition "Angular Raga," which is influenced by classical Indian Raga music.
Chase Morrin's Group was also selected among six bands nationwide to compete at the Next Generation Monterey Jazz Festival on April 10 in the new Open Combo category. The festival was composed of top university bands and directors.
Morrin was the youngest, at age 16, directing his own trio. The band won second place in the division and Morrin was one of three musicians in the division, earning a soloist award with the other two musicians from the University of Miami. Chase Morrin Trio consists of Chase on piano, Tyler on bass, and Fernando on drums. Tyler Eaton, 21, is from Central California and is studying classical bass at UCSD with Mark Dresser. Fernando Gomez, 19, is an up-and-coming drummer from the East Bay area, and is already playing professionally on the San Diego jazz scene.
Daniel Feldman and Chase Morrin formed Latin Connection Duo so they could compete as a high school band at festivals in which all members had to be from the same school. They competed at the Reno Jazz Festival on April 23 and earned second place among hundreds of high school jazz combos.
Feldman and Morrin were both awarded Outstanding Musicianship awards, and Morrin won the overall Outstanding Performer award for the whole festival.
Morrin also won both the big band and small ensemble composition contests held at the Reno Jazz Festival.
Feldman and Morrin found out that the Latin Connection Duo won the prestigious 33rd national DOWNBEAT Magazine Student Music award for Best Latin group. In addition, Chase won two more DOWNBEAT awards for original compositions.
