DMUSD board expected to vote Wednesday to release Superintendent McClain

McClain reads prepared statement thanking district

The Del Mar Union School District trustees are expected to vote to release Superintendent Sharon McClain from her contract at a special meeting on Wednesday, according to board President Comischell Rodriguez.

Rodriquez said Tuesday McClain was notified on Monday that the vote was planned and McClain requested that the vote be held in open session.

Rodriguez said it has been a difficult process but that she could not disclose all the reasons behind the superintendent's release. She noted the move was unrelated to an incident regarding the McClain's handling of a student's suspension that was raised in December.

Rodriquez said she planned to read a prepared statement at Wednesday's meeting.

"It is not a new issue; it is a parallel issue that has been running for sometime," Rodriguez said.

McClain has been with the district since August 2008. She was hired after a summer-long, nationwide search following the removal of the former schools chief, Tom Bishop, that February.

Parents circulated e-mails on Tuesday to rally people to attend Wednesday's meeting, which was scheduled for 12:45 p.m. at Del Mar Hills School.

Rodriguez said she was sorry to have to hold the meeting just a week before spring break, which begins April 5.

"We anticipate a meeting before spring break to announce who will be the interim superintendent," Rodriguez said. "My goal is to make sure the transition is as seamless as possible."

Rodriguez said the interim superintendent would be selected as soon as possible.

McClain did not return a phone call requesting comment.

On Wednesday at 9:17 a.m., the district posted the agenda for a special board meeting set for Thursday at 3 p.m. to appoint or employ an interim superintendent.

McClain read a six-page statement to the audience at the beginning of Wednesday's meeting.

The first page of that statement follows:

(Partial) Statement from Dr. Sharon McClain, Superintendent of Schools, to the Community of Del Mar

I'm glad to have the opportunity to express some thoughts about the Del Mar Union School District and my tenure here before I leave.

It has been a true blessing to work with the staff, parents and students in the District for the past year and a half. Our students are wonderful — they are capable, motivates and bright — and each one is a precious individual.

With Open House coming up soon, everyone will get to see the high quality of student work and the hours of preparation that teachers and all school staff put into instruction for students every day. We are also blessed as a district with active, involved parents who passionately express their desires and hopes for the District. From difficult debate and many ideas come good solutions. Thank you.
