Santa Fe Christian Eagles don't let venue intimidate

Baseball:

  • Santa Fe Christian is a small-school program that apparently isn't easily fazed by cavernous venues.

The Eagles defeated Bishop's 10-5 in a nonleague game at Petco Park on May 7 for their seventh consecutive victory.

The victor followed a pair of impressive Coastal League North wins earlier in the week — they beat Escondido Charter 7-0 on May 5, and Calvin Christian 21-2 two days later.

Barrett Floyd had four hits and Jake McKinney had two hits and four RBI to lead the Eagles in the Bishop's game.

Eagles starter John Gamble combined with Bobby Zarubin on a four-hitter in the Escondido Charter game.

Gamble, who was credited with the victory, struck out five batters and allowed four hits and no walks in five innings.

Ethan Ogden had two hits including a homer.

Josh Estill led the Eagles in the Calvin Christian romp, going 4-for-4 with three homers and seven RBI.

The Eagles improved to 6-0 in league and 15-4-1 overall for the season.

  • Torrey Pines extended its winning streak to 14 games as the Falcons swept a three-game Avocado League series from San Pasqual of Escondido.

Andrew Goodman had two hits and two RBI and Evan Mason added two hits to lead the first place Falcons to a 6-4 victory in the May 5 series opener.

Nate Walker and Reed Mason combined on a five-hitter to lead the Falcons to a 2-1 victory in the first game of a May 8 doubleheader.

Walker, who started and was credited with the victory, struck out six batters and allowed one run on four hits and two walks in five innings. Mason struck out three batters and allowed one hit and one walk in two innings of shutout ball.

The Falcons pounded out 11 hits including five doubles in a 10-3 win later in the day.

Morgan Oliver, Joey DeNato and Shane Bingham each had two hits including a double, and Kyle Johnson and Taylor Murphy both doubled and drove in a pair of runs.

Falcons starter Cole Swanson, who was credited with the victory, pitched 5 2/3 innings of two-hit ball. He combined with reliever Brine Thene on a four-hitter.

The Falcons improved to 12-0 in league and 22-6 overall for the season.

  • Cathedral Catholic rebounded nicely from midseason slump with a timely two-game Western League series sweep of University City.

Jared Davis had three hits including a pair of doubles and two RBI and Eric Sapp added three hits to lead the Dons in a 9-4 victory in the May 5 series opener.

Casey Munoz had two hits including a homer in a 3-2 Dons victory two days later.

Dons starter Daniel Camarena struck out nine batters and allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks in seven innings.

The Dons, who'd lost three of their last four games going into the series, improved to 6-2 in league and 14-9 overall for the season.

Softball:

  • Sophomore pitching standout Lauren Hynes pitched a six-hit shutout to lead Torrey Pines to a 3-0 victory over Escondido in an Avocado League game on May 6.
