Del Mar unemployment figures still relatively low despite rise

The economic slump has taken its toll on Del Mar, however, the city continues to fare far better than most, with unemployment rates that are among the lowest nationally and regionally.

Del Mar’s unemployment rate has jumped from 1.9 percent in 2001 to 5.3 percent this year — and though that may seem like a negative trend, it has the lowest unemployment rate of all the cities in this county, according to data from the California Employment Development Department. Del Mar’s unemployed population, which is about 200 residents, is especially low when you consider that San Diego County has a 10.1 percent unemployment rate, and California has a 12.4 percent unemployment rate.

Del Mar’s unemployment rate also continues to be lower than the nation’s unemployment rate, which just hit a two-year low at 8.8 percent, according to data released this month by the U.S. Department of Labor.
