The city of Solana Beach is moving forward with its second phase of renovations to Fletcher Cove Community Center, but after receiving construction bids that were all too high, city employees returned to the drafting table to find ways to cut costs.
After reducing those project costs by about $75,000, Solana Beach City Council awarded a contract to Delta Builders for $267,475, which was the lowest of six bids.
Total funding for this project is $279,000. Of that amount, $69,000 is coming from the city’s Americans with Disabilities Account (ADA) account; $25,000 is coming from the city’s Re-development Agency (RDA) account; and $185,000 is coming from a donation by the Solana Beach Community Foundation.
The city’s RDA account has a remaining $37,000, so council also authorized staff to use some of that money toward the renovations, though specifics about which upgrades it will be spent on won’t be decided until the council’s next meeting on Feb. 9. Community fundraising efforts for the project will also continue.
Plans to renovate Fletcher Cove Community Center came about in 2007 when it was one of the properties identified as one of the city-owned facilities that needed to be updated to comply with the ADA. The first phase of the Fletcher Cove Community Center renovation was completed in November, and included a new parking lot.
The second phase of renovations on the Fletcher Cove Community Center building should start within the next few weeks, and be completed by July.
