In case you didn’t watch the last Del Mar Council meeting, it was on the agenda to discuss asking SANDAG to place Camino Del Mar as an arterial on the regional transportation map, so that the city could apply for grants to improve the street. Anything to get more grants.
But, many citizens spoke in opposition to such a move, because they didn’t want to give up any control over the street, such as making Camino Del Mar through town one lane each way. The council also talked like the one-lane issue was a given, so the issue was postponed.
Why does the council keep pushing for one lane through town, when all efforts to do so in the past have been shut down by polls of the citizens? Maybe they will just go ahead and do it, like they did in allowing sidewalk cafes to infringe on our only “walkable” sidewalks, without asking anyone!
We’re going to have to keep our eyes on that issue, or we will have more cars driving through our residential side-streets to try and avoid the total congestion of a one-lane each way main street, which has always been, and will continue to be a scenic coastal highway.
