A Swedish college choir known throughout Scandinavia will perform Saturday evening, May 28 at Calvary Lutheran Church as part of a tour that will take it to six other congregations in Southern California as well.

The Believers, featuring about three dozen Christian students from the College of Music, Pitea, and from Framnas Junior College will sing a varied program, from traditional hymns and classical music to jazz and Swedish folk music. The concert will begin at 7 p.m.

Director Stig Sandlund has lead the choir since it started 42 years ago. Over the decades, different versions of the group have sung in Finland, Norway, Hungary, Poland, Israel, Egypt and the United States and have produced many music CDs.

“As an alumni myself, being part of The Believers was probably one of the biggest highlights of my life both spiritually through fellowship in Christ with my fellow students and musically under the direction of Stig Sandlund,” said Marianne Rethwisch, spokesman for the group. “His ability to get just the right tone and phrasing as well as intonation was amazing.”

On its latest tour, the music students will also perform May 21 at King of Kings Lutheran Church in Oceanside; May 22 at Faith Community Church, Encinitas, and Redeemer by the Sea Lutheran Church, Carlsbad; May 24 at Swedish Church, San Pedro; May 25 at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, La Mesa; and May 27 at First Evangelical Free Church of Fullerton.

The Believers are the second performance in a four-part season at Calvary that began March 19 with studio and spiritual singers Jeff and Vangie Gunn. Next on the 2011 schedule at the Solana Beach church are:

Aug. 6: Eve Selis and her Blazing Band of Ruffians. The local singer and songwriter has put out numerous CDs and was named Best Americana Artist at the 2010 San Diego Music Awards. Among her musical influences are rhythm and blues, rock ‘n’ roll, folk and country. An optional barbecue dinner will be served.

Sept. 17: Mark Price. He will give dramatic readings as he portrays the life of Saint Joseph — next to Mary, the one who knew Jesus the best. Price has been playing Biblical figures for a quarter-century in churches, halls and theaters and on film around the world.

Tickets are $20 for each of the four events, $15 for ages 17 to 10, and free for children younger than 10. Wine and cheese will be served half an hour before the music.

Calvary is at 424 Via de la Valle, just north of the San Diego County Fairgrounds.
