David M. Walker may no longer be the Comptroller General of the United States, a position in which he was the country’s chief auditor from 1998 to 2008, but he is still unofficially auditing the federal government as part of his Comeback America Initiative — an effort to engage the public and assist policymakers to solve America’s fiscal imbalances.
The Harvard-educated, outspoken advocate for fiscal responsibility and sustainability made a visit to Del Mar on Feb. 23 as part of a tour in which he’s outlining a plan to turn the country around and also promote his book “Comeback America.” Carmel Valley-based LifePro Financial Services, an insurance and financial service marketing company, sponsored the invitation-only speaking engagement, which took place at the Del Mar Hilton.
LifePro spokesman David Jacobs said Walker spoke to the company’s more than 200 financial advisors about what the future holds for taxation and its effect on retirement incomes — “basically, the way to pay the least amount of taxes on your investments,” he said.
“We chose to bring [Walker] here because he is the foremost authority on the state of finances of the U.S. government,” Jacobs said.
A major part of the Comeback America Initiative is building support for fiscal-related policy reforms regarding issues such as healthcare and defense spending, tax reform, social security and international deficits. Since the book’s 2010 release, Walker has been engaging in various on-air, online, print and other communication activities, from public speaking to town hall forums.
“While we face serious challenges, America has faced major challenges in the past and we have always eventually risen to the meet them. It’s not too late,” said Walker to a packed Del Mar conference room. “We must start to make tough choices soon, before we pass a tipping point … Our elected representatives must do their part. However, all of us must do our part as well. This starts with each of us being more informed and involved, while also assuming more personal responsibility and leading by example.”
