Boys basketball:

Cathedral Catholic cleared another hurdle in its quest for a state title bid.

The Dons advanced to the Division III Southern California Regional semifinals after a thrilling 89-79 double-overtime victory over Oak Park (Ventura County) in a second-round playoff game on March 10.

The Dons were scheduled to play Alemany of Mission Hills (near Los Angeles) on March 13.

The Dons advanced to the regional semifinals after defeating Palm Desert 65-57 on March 7.

Xavier Williams scored 27 points and had rebounds to lead the Dons in the Oak Park game.

Brandon Michel scored 22 points and had six steals, and Nishika Federico added 20 points.

Williams scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Dons in the Palm Desert game, and Federico added 15 points and nine boards.

Nick Prunty contributed 11 points.

The Dons extended their winning streak to seven games as they improved their overall record for the season to 30-3.


Torrey Pines lost to Mission Viejo 70-62 in the first round of the Southern California Division I regional playoffs.

Joe Rahon scored 21 points to lead the Falcons and Garrett Galvin and Sam Worman each added 15 points.

The Falcons concluded their season with a 22-11 overall record.

Baseball:

Torrey Pines extended its season-opening winning streak to four games as the Falcons defeated Canyon Crest Academy 4-3 in a nonleague game on March 10.

The win was their third straight decided by a run, after defeating Escondido 4-3 on March 6 and Great Oak 2-1 two days later.

Brock Larson had three hits including a double and one RBI to lead the Falcons offensively in the CCA game, and Reed Mason, who came into pitch in the fifth, struck out five batters and allowed no walks in three innings of one hit ball for the win.


Santa Fe Christian is off to a 5-0 start as the Eagles continued their season-opening winning streak with a decisive 11-2 victory over San Diego in a Falcon-Pirate tournament game on March 10.

The victory followed a 10-9 win against Orange Glen on March 6, and a 7-0 victory over San Dieguito Academy on March 8.

Bobby Zarubin led the Eagles in the San Diego game with three hits including a double and two RBI.

John Gamble added two hits including a double and two RBI and Josh Estill and Graham Gomez each contributed two hits.

Zarubin had two hits including a double and three RBI to lead the Eagles in the Orange Glen game, and had two hits including a home run in the SDA game.

Nolan Gannon struck out nine batters and allowed two walks in six innings of one-hit ball against SDA.


Cathedral Catholic improved to 2-1 in its season-opening Hilltop-Lolitas tournament with a 2-0 victory over La Costa Canyon on March 10.

The Dons opened the tournament with a 2-1 victory over Hilltop on March 6, but then lost 7-5 to Rancho Buena Vista two days later.
