Boys basketball:

Cathedral Catholic made easy work of University City in a 75-28 Western League victory on Jan. 11 that solidified the Dons’ status as league frontrunners.

The victory followed a 75-47 league win against Scripps Ranch on Jan. 8.

Brandon Michel scored 16 points to lead the Dons in the University City game and Michael Rosenburg added 13 points.

Niksha Federico contributed 10 points.

Xavier Williams scored 25 points to lead the Dons in the Scripps Ranch game.

Federico and Nick Prunty added 15 and 13 points, respectively.

The Dons moved into sole possession of first place as they improved to 3-0 in league and 15-2 overall for the season.


Torrey Pines defeated Centennial of Compton 44-39 in a San Diego-Los Angeles Hoops Challenge game on Jan. 12.

The one-day showcase tournament featured 12 teams from San Diego and greater Los Angeles.

Sam Worman scored 16 points to lead the Falcons and Brandon Cyrus added 10 points.

The Falcons improved their overall record for the season to 10-6.


Santa Fe Christian kicked off Coastal League play with a 59-56 victory over Horizon on Jan. 7.

Grant Corsi led the Eagles with 25 points and Justin Byrd added 18 points.

The Eagles improved their overall record for the season to 10-4.


San Diego Jewish Academy defeated Escondido Charter 51-44 on Jan. 10 for its first Pacific League victory.

The Lions snapped a four-game skid and they improved to 1-3 in league and 4-5 overall for the season.

Judah Rosenzweig and Ilan Graubart each scored 13 points to lead the Lions and Adam Sloane added 11 points.

Rosenzweig led the Lions with eight rebounds and two blocks and Ilan Graubart contributed four rebounds and four assists.

Girls basketball:

Santa Fe Christian lost to Del Norte 45-40 in a nonleague game on Jan. 9.

Megan Franke scored 12 points to lead the Eagles and Lindsey Almquist added nine points.

The loss followed an 82-58 defeat at the hands of Horizon in a Coastal League opener for both teams two days earlier.

Franke led the Eagles with 19 points and Maile Burtech added 10 points.

The Eagle fell to 9-7 overall for the season and have lost three straight games since a season-high seven game winning streak ended on Jan. 5 when they lost to Eastlake 58-52 in the championship game of the Crawford tournament.


Torrey Pines lost to San Marcos 60-58 in a nonleague game on Jan. 9.

Hannah Dobson scored 16 points to lead the Falcons and Madison Lombard added 14 points.

Christina Ellis and Jasmine Gutierrez each added 11 points.

The Falcons fell to 7-7 overall for the season.


Cathedral Catholic defeated University City 63-52 in a Western league game on Jan. 12 for its fourth straight victory.

The Dons improved to 3-0 in league and 8-6 overall for the season.

Girls soccer:

Cathedral Catholic defeated Canyon Crest Academy 3-0 in a nonleague game on Jan. 11 for its sixth straight win.

The victory followed a 6-2 win against Our Lady of the Peace in a Western League opener for both teams on Jan. 9.

Brittany Doan scored two goals to lead the Dons in the CCA game and Laura Shea added one goal.

Alyssa Fiddes and Kaylee Fitzgerald each added one assist.

Dons goalie Hannah Macaulay had three saves.

Doan led the Dons with two goals in the Our Lady of the Peace game and Courtney Brown and Sunny Dunphy each added one goal and one assist.

Macaulay had two saves.

The Dons improved their overall record for the season to 13-2-3.


Santa Fe Christian defeated Mission Vista 3-0 in a nonleague game on Jan. 9.

The victory followed a 9-0 trouncing of Mountain Empire in a nonleague game two days earlier.

Kayla McGuinness scored two goals and Katie North added one goal to lead the Eagles in the Mission Vista game.

Eagles goalie Madalyn Tschantz had three saves.

Ali Whiting scored three goals to lead the Eagles in the Mountain Empire game and North and Taryn Tastad each added two goals.

McGuinness contributed four assists and Tschantz had one save.

The Eagles improved to 6-5 overall for the season.


Torrey Pines lost to San Pasqual 2-1 in a nonleague game on Jan. 11.

Gianna Montini scored one goal in defeat for the Falcons.

The loss followed a 3-1 nonleague defeat at the hands of La Costa Canyon on Jan. 9 in which Abigail Palkowitz scored the Falcons’ only goal.

The Falcons fell to 4-5-1 overall for the season.

Boys soccer:

Torrey Pines lost to San Pasqual 1-0 in a nonleague game on Jan. 11.

Falcons goalie Patrick Koeneke had five saves.

The Falcons fell to 4-6-1 overall for the season.

Cathedral Catholic lost to St. Augustine 2-0 in a Western League opener for both teams on Jan. 8.

The loss snapped a five-game unbeaten streak going back to Dec. 12. The Dons were 4-0-1 over that span.
