A week that started with a setback ended with red-hot Cathedral Catholic gaining ground in their quest for a Western League championship.
The Dons had their nine-game winning streak snapped when they lost to Army-Navy 67-61 in a nonleague Martin Luther King tournament game on Jan. 21.
But the Dons bounced back, trouncing La Jolla 81-40 on Jan. 22 and then defeating St. Augustine 62-59 two days later to remain unbeaten in league.
Xavier Williams scored 19 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Dons in the La Jolla game and Niksha Federico added 11 points and eight rebounds.
Michael Rosenburg scored 19 points to lead the Dons in the St. Augustine game and Brandon Michel added 12 points.
Williams scored 15 points and Federico added 14 in defeat for the Dons against Army-Navy.
The Dons improved to 7-0 in league and 19-3 overall for the season.
Torrey Pines moved into sole possession of second place in the Palomar League after picking up a pair of decisive victories.
The Falcons defeated Poway 58-44 in a league game on Jan. 23 and then defeated Canyon Crest Academy 69-47 two days later.
The victories followed a 60-51 loss to St. Augustine in a Martin Luther King tournament game on Jan. 21.
Sam Worman scored 18 points had six rebounds to lead the Falcons in the Poway game and Zack Wagner added 14 points.
Worman led the Falcons with19 points in the CCA game and Cyrus added 12 points.
Worman scored 17 points in defeat for the Falcons in the St. Augustine game.
Santa Fe Christian
A setback in Santa Fe Christian’s first week of Coastal League play that could have hurt the Eagles’ morale appears to have had the opposite effect.
The Eagles are unbeaten since a gut-wrenching 34-33 league loss to Francis Parker on Jan. 15.
They extended their winning streak to five games with a 79-39 trouncing of Escondido in a nonleague game on Jan. 26.
The victory followed a 77-66 league win against Bishop’s the previous day.
Brodie Martin scored 20 points and Grant Corsi added 10 points to lead the Eagles in the Escondido Charter game.
Corsi poured in 35 points and Justin Byrd added 22 points to lead the Eagles in the Bishop’s game.
The victory helped the Eagles remain in a three-way tie for first place with Army-Navy and Francis Parker.
The Eagles improved to 3-1 in league and 15-5 overall for the season.
San Diego Jewish Academy lost to Tri-City Christian 68-33 in a Pacific League game on Jan. 24.
Judah Rosenzweig scored nine points to lead the Lions and Ilan Graubart added nine points.
The loss dropped the Lions to 1-6 in league and 4-8 overall for the season.
Torrey Pines snapped an eight-game losing streak with a resounding 74-29 Palomar League victory over Canyon Crest Academy on Jan. 25.
The victory followed a 61-53 league loss to Poway on Jan. 23 and a 53-37 loss to Our Lady of the Peace in a nonleague Martin Luther King tournament game two days earlier.
