Boys basketball:

Cathedral Catholic was perfect on its way to winning a Western League title.

But with a chance to win a San Diego Section title against a league rival they’d already beaten in both previous meetings, the Dons were far from anything resembling perfection.

The Dons whose 12-0 league championship run included two wins against St. Augustine, experienced a stunning 62-36 loss at the hands of the Saints in the Division III championship game on March 2. The loss was the most lopsided setback the Dons experienced all season.

The Dons nevertheless advanced to the Division III state championship tournament.

They were scheduled to play Santa Margarita in a first-round game on March 6.

The Dons, who’d defeated St. Augustine 67-64 on Jan. 4 and 62-59 on Jan. 24, fell behind early in the title game and never recovered.

They were outscored 17-4 in a first quarter that set the tone for the game and trailed 39-16 going into the intermission.

Xavier Williams scored 13 points and had eight rebounds to lead the Dons and Brandon Michel added 12 points and six boards.

The Dons defeated Valley Center 71-42 in a Feb. 27 semifinal.

Niksha Federico led the Dons with 15 points and Williams added 12 points.

The Dons fell to 27-4 overall for the season.

Torrey Pines lost to El Camino in a Division I semifinal on Feb. 27.

Dominic Hovasse scored 13 points to lead the Falcons.

Brandon Cyrus and Sam Worman added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

The loss dropped the Falcons overall record for the season to 20-10.

Santa Fe Christian lost to Army-Navy 59-53 in a Division IV semifinal on Feb. 27.

Grant Corsi scored 25 points to lead the Eagles and Brian Finley added 12 points.

The Eagles fell to 20-9 overall for the season.

Canyon Crest Academy lost to St. Augustine 74-39 in a Division III semifinal on Feb. 27.

James Chenevey scored 20 points in defeat for the Ravens.

The Ravens fell to 17-14 overall for the season.

Girls basketball:

Cathedral Catholic split two regular season meetings with fellow Western League co-champion Our Lady of the Peace.

The Dons lost the rubber match at the most inopportune of times.

They experienced a 60-42 loss at the hands of OLP in the Division III title game on March 2.

But the Dons advanced to the state playoffs as divisional finalists. They were scheduled to play Gahr of Cerritos in a first round game Division III game on March 6.

Juliet Jones scored 15 points to lead the Dons and Wendy Anae added nine points.

The loss followed a 76-56 victory over Mission Bay in a Feb. 26 semifinal.

Anae scored 21 points and had 18 rebounds to lead the Dons and Timoney Moyer added 19 points.

Haley Syroka and Kendall Fisher each contributed 11 points.

The Dons fell to 18-10 overall for the season.

Girls soccer:

Nothing is ever easy when Cathedral Catholic goes up against Western League rival La Jolla.
