Boys basketball:

Cathedral Catholic lost to its nemesis St. Augustine 55-45 in a Southern California Division III Regional Semifinal on March 12.

Xavier Williams scored 23 points to lead the Dons and Niksha Federico added 10 points.

The Dons trailed 24-17 at the intermission, but after storming out to a 32-30 lead in a third quarter in which they outscored St. Augustine 15-6, they were outscored 25-13 in a decisive fourth quarter.

The Dons were hoping to avenge a 62-36 loss to St. Augustine in the March 2 San Diego Section Division III title game.

The Dons defeated St. Augustine three times in the regular season, including twice in Western League play.

The loss dropped to Dons overall record for the season to 29-5.

Baseball:

Cathedral Catholic bounced back from its first loss of the season with an 8-6 victory over Poway in a Hilltop-Lolitas tournament game on March 15.

The Dons experienced a 4-0 loss to Granite Hills a day earlier in the same tournament.

Stephen Gonsalves had two hits including a home run and four RBI to lead the Dons in the Poway game.

Gabe Simpson and Giovanni Garbella each had two hits.

The Dons improved their overall record for the season to 4-1.


Santa Fe Christian defeated Calvary Christian 1-0 in a Falcon-Pirate tournament game on March 14 that went 10 innings.

The Eagles out-hit Calvary Christian 14-4 in support of pitchers Matt Carlson, Cole Acosta and Chase Bushor, who combined to strike out 14 batters and allow four walks.

Bushor, who was credited with the victory, struck out six batters and allowed two walks in five innings of no-hit ball.

Troy Zarubin singled in Brian Blatnick for the game’s only run.

Greg Saggese led the Eagles with four hits, Dillon Paulson contributed three hits and John Gamble and Tyler Ledbetter each added two hits.

The Eagles improved their overall record for the season to 4-2.


Torrey Pines lost to Carlsbad 3-1 in a Falcon-Pirate tournament game on March 14.

The Falcons lost to El Camino 3-1 two days earlier in the same tournament.

Mark Detrow and John Remick each had two hits to lead the Falcons in the Carlsbad game.

The Falcons were held to three hits in the El Camino game. Remick and Nolan Weinberg each contributed a double and Detrow singled and scored the Falcons only run.


Canyon Crest Academy lost to Escondido Charter 3-1 in a Falcon-Pirate tournament game on March 14.

The loss followed a 3-0 victory over Escondido Charter two days earlier in the same tournament.

Riley Adams had the Ravens’ only hit in the Escondido Charter game.

Shane Sandler struck out seven batters and allowed no walks in a complete game shutout to lead the Ravens in the Escondido Charter game.

The Ravens fell to 2-3 overall for the season.

Softball:

Torrey Pines defeated San Pasqual 1-0 in a North County tournament game on March 14.

Pitching standout Rachel Nasland tossed a two-hit shutout and drove in the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out single that scored Taylor Steele.
