Del Mar Rotary busy all around
Nov 13, 2008
 By Kathy Day

Members of the Del Mar Rotary Club are coming off one event and heading straight into two more.

Well, make that three if you add the wheelchair basketball tournament they were asked to support by Lee Oberman from the neighboring Del Mar-Solana Beach club.

On Nov. 3, the Del Mar club held its annual golf tournament to raise money for vocational scholarships and community and international service projects.

Event chair Janice Kurth - the president-elect - said the event was successful despite the challenges of the economy, which kept some golfers away. She's still tallying so couldn't say how much the event raised.

Then, on Saturday, a group headed to Tijuana to work on building another house as part of their Esperanza project. Chad Brown was the cheerleader for the project at the Nov. 6 meeting; Rob Morse heads it up.

Next up: The annual St. Leo's Head Start Christmas Party, set for Dec. 11. This year Walter Strangman, Gene Heisel and Marlene Gotz are heading the committee that's getting ready for putting smiles on the faces of about 75 children. The event's been held yearly since 1992, said past president Marty Peters.

As a side note: President Rob Mullally, leading the weekly meeting at St. Peter's Episcopal Church on the Thursday after Election Day, proudly introduced three women - Ida Ford, Maggie Kawasaki and Maria Valencia. He spent his Election Day with them as poll workers in Kawasaki's garage.

Mullally has worked the polls since he became a citizen in 2003 and has worked with Kawasaki and Brown since then. It was Valencia's first time, he said.
