Before getting stuffed at the Thanksgiving table, why not work up an appetite with San Diego Jewish Academy?

On Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 27 at 8 a.m., the school is hosting its second annual Turkey Trot, a 3.1-mile walk and run.

Last year, 150 participants showed up to enjoy a holiday workout on the school's cross country course. The scenic path along Highway 56 trail is lined by trees flush with the golden and red leaves of fall.

Athletic director Charlie Wund said the race is a great opportunity to get outdoors and share the holiday morning with health and fitness-minded friends.

"We believe very highly in the physical fitness and well-being of all members of the community," said Wund.

In addition to providing a good workout, the Trot is also supporting a good cause. Proceeds from the race will go toward the Hand Up Youth Food Pantry, a program at the Jewish Family Services Center that helps children in need. Trot participants are also encouraged to bring a food donation for the pantry.

Don't forget dressing
Wund is aiming for a festive atmosphere, encouraging people to dress up for the occasion.
Last year, teacher Glenn Dorshay came in full turkey costume. The turkey will return this year although its wearer is still secret, Wund said. The academy's lion mascot will also race.

All participants will receive a T-shirt and goodie bag and a post race celebration will feature a raffle with prizes from sponsors Souplantation, Jimbos, the Grand Del Mar, La Jolla Shores Hotel and more. Last year, one out of three people got raffle gifts, Wund said.

Register online at sdja.com or active.com. Children 12 and under can race for free, while teen and adult registration is $29.

Registration is also offered pre-race on Thanksgiving morning. San Diego Jewish Academy is at 11860 Carmel Creek Road.
