Suspect pleads not guilty in jewelry robbery

A man accused of taking $300,000 worth of merchandise from a Del Mar jewelry store at gunpoint pleaded not guilty to three felony charges, including robbery and possession of an assault weapon.

Allan Richard Ziemann, 43, was on probation for grand theft when he allegedly robbed Janetelli Jewelers on Jan. 8.

Ziemann allegedly put a handgun to the owner's head and ordered him to the floor, then fled with the $300,000 in merchandise, sheriff's investigators said.

Detectives identified Ziemann as a suspect based on witness statements and evidence gathered at the scene, leading to the defendant's arrest last Thursday night near his home in Scripps Ranch.

Based on the defendant's alleged probation violation, Judge David Szumowski ordered him held without bail.

Ziemann has six prior armed robbery convictions on his record, according to Deputy District Attorney Allison Worden, who noted that he is also charged with felony possession of a firearm in connection with the Del Mar heist.

Szumowski set a readiness conference for Feb. 4 and a preliminary hearing for Feb. 6.
