The unemployment rate in San Diego County rose to 8.6 percent in January, reflecting a loss of 28,000 jobs compared to the previous month, the California Employment Development Department reported Friday.

The unemployment rate in the county was 7.5 percent in December and 5.1 percent in January of last year, according to the EDD.

The unadjusted unemployment rate in California in January was 10.6 percent, up from 9.1 percent the previous month, according to the EDD. The national unemployment rate in January was 8.5 percent.

Between December and January, the San Diego region shed 28,000 jobs, most in trade, transportation, utilities, retail, leisure and hospitality and professional and business services, according to the EDD.
