Mild thunderstorms move through area

Mild thunderstorms moved through the San Diego area Wednesday, delivering scattered sprinkles and hail along with some small, lightning-sparked brush fires.

The northeast-traveling low-pressure system was expected to drop light precipitation in the region "off and on, maybe with a few more significant drops later tonight or tomorrow,'' National Weather Service forecaster Stan Wasowski said about 9:40 a.m., moments after a booming clap of thunder set off car alarms in Ocean Beach.

Through the late morning and early afternoon, more than a dozen reports of possible lightning fires in the county's northern and eastern communities kept firefighters busy, though none of the blazes amounted to much more than "spots'' of smoldering foliage, Cal Fire Capt. Nick Schuler said. "Fortunately, the majority of the lightning strikes have come with precipitation,'' Schuler noted.

The two largest fires, each of which scorched an acre or so, erupted about 10:50 a.m. off Highland Valley Road in the Ramona area and at 12:30 p.m. at Willow Glen and East Mission roads in Fallbrook.

Ground and airborne crews were able to quickly corral the minor blazes, which caused no reported structural damage or injuries.

Despite the electric-storm activity and hail, the weather was overall "very typical for June gloom,'' and no significant rainfall was likely to occur this week, according to Wasowski.
