A mother cat and her nine kittens were discovered in the back of a U-Haul that arrived in Los Angeles at the end of May after a 2,000-mile drive from Chicago.
The kittens are now four to five weeks old. "Jasmine," the mother, and her babies are available for adoption starting Friday morning, June 26, at the Helen Woodward Animal Center starting at 11 a.m.
"Jasmine probably saw the back of the moving van open and thought it would be a nice warm, safe place for her and her babies. The family probably had blankets as padding and the boxes provided a comfy nook to call home," HWAC spokesperson Trisha St. George said.
Once discovered, the U-Haul driving family was frantic with what to do with their Chicago stowaways. Five kittens were given away and Jasmine, 1 1/2, and the remaining kittens were taken to a Los Angeles rescue group that works closely with HWAC. The mom and litter were transferred to HWAC at the end of May.
The cats were placed with an animal center volunteer foster care provider and given proper medical attention.
