Bald Out set for July 19 Area residents affected by alopecia areata - an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss, usually from the scalp - are invited to participate in the first ever San Diego National Bald Out event, scheduled for July 19.
Organized by Carmel Valley resident Mary Marshall, the event is intended to encourage women with hair loss who haven't experienced the freedom of going out with an uncovered head to give it a try.
Marshall hopes the event will raise awareness about the disease. She posted a video on YouTube about the event two months ago. The video has already had more than 2,700 views (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXxBKwi-1lw).
The San Diego event is in conjunction with Bald Out events in cities around the U.S., Canada, England and Scotland.
Participants will be out speaking to people about the disease from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 19 at Fashion Valley Mall. There will also be a raffle for gift certificates to Chico's.
Volunteers needed Drivers are needed to cover shifts and routes throughout San Diego County for Meals-on-Wheels.
"Direct service organizations like Meals-on-Wheels see a decrease in volunteers during the summer months because of planned vacations and the change in summer schedules for families and college students," a recent news release explained.
Volunteers are critical in keeping the program's costs down. The organization is experiencing a decrease in donations due to economic conditions, which is why volunteers are so important, the release stated.
Meals-on-Wheels delivers nutritious food to local seniors living independently.
