DNA links suspect in home invasion assault series

A Tierrasanta businessman jailed after allegedly trying to rape a Mission Valley resident has been tied through DNA evidence to a 13-month citywide series of similar sex assaults, San Diego police reported Thursday.

Thomas James Parker, 39, was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly confronted the 33-year-old woman in her garage, threatened her with a knife and grabbed her. The assailant fled when the victim screamed and fought back, and officers captured him a short time later with help from passers-by.

Genetic evidence allegedly implicates Parker - a married father of two young children and co-owner of a Little Italy coffee shop - in at least three of the seven home-invasion sex assaults, which began in June 2008, including a case in the Carmel Valley area on February 10, 2009.

Based on those findings and other similarities in the series, authorities said they plan to charge Parker with committing all of the crimes.
