A record 44,907 people attended the opening day of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club's 70th horse racing season, but a jockey was injured and a horse had to be euthanized when it broke a leg, track officials said Thursday.

Jockey Rafael Bejarano was seriously injured when his mount, Mi Rey, stumbled and broke a leg during the third race on opening day Wednesday, and Mi Rey had to be euthanized.

The previous attendance record of 44,181 was set in 1996 during the running of the Pacific Classic, according to the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club.

Last year's attendance on opening day was 43,459, according to the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club.
