Busby ready to do battle in congressional race

Francine Busby
Editor's note: This is the second in a series of profiles of candidates seeking the 50th Congressional District seat.

Cardiff School Board's Francine Busby will make her third attempt at the 50th District congressional seat this year, running on a platform of fixing the health care system, putting San Diego at the forefront of the new energy economy and bringing good-paying jobs with benefits to San Diego.

"I feel with my experience building relationships in this district and in Washington ... that I am very well positioned to represent this district," said Busby in a recent interview.

Busby, who ran first in 2004 and again in 2006, when Brian Bilbray won the seat after the resignation of Randy "Duke" Cunningham, said she feels that the issues in this year's race are quite similar.

She added that she is seasoned and established in the area, which should help her adequately hear, represent and respond to the public's concerns if she is elected.

"I reflect the values and lifestyle of people in this district, where I've lived for 20 years," Busby said. "I want a government that works for all of us ... I will do everything I can to serve the people of this district."

She said she would represent this district much differently than incumbent Bilbray. She said she feels he votes against progress and success in America, which she intends to counter in her votes if elected. She also intends to support worthy causes with her presence and resources and to treat all the issues honestly.

Busby will take on Solana Beach Councilman Dave Roberts and Escondido criminal appellate attorney Tracy Emblem in the Democratic primary next June. Then she will challenge the Republican candidate in the general election at the end of next year.

If successful, Busby would represent Escondido, San Marcos, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad, La Jolla, University City and sections of Pacific Beach.

Busby served on the Cardiff School Board in 2002, as president of the Cardiff Education Foundation in 2000 and in various community organizations.
