League sponsors interfaith program

Eighty students from Cathedral Catholic High School and the San Diego Jewish Academy came together on Oct. 29 to provoke a greater understanding between religious communities by celebrating each religion's evening prayer services.

The evening began with the Catholic Vespers, or evening prayer services, held in Cathedral Catholic's St. Therese Chapel.

Students from Cathedral Catholic led the group in song and spoken prayer accompanied by a small student-led band.

Then guests were brought outside for the Jewish Ma'ariv, or evening prayer services, where San Diego Jewish Academy students lead the service in Hebrew.

The services concluded with students and attendees singing a version of Bob Marley's "One Love" lead by Cathedral Catholic's Director of Liturgical Music, Tim Foley.

After the service the program held a brief question and answer period where guests and students were broken up into groups and each asked a theological or general question about religion or personal faith practices. Questions were aimed at drawing similarities between the two faiths.

The event was sponsored by the Anti-Defamation League, which was founded in 1913 to fight anti-Semitism through programs and services like the interfaith program.
