Woman gives birth in parking lot amidst morning traffic jam

A woman gave birth Thursday while stuck in traffic in the Mount Soledad area because of a multi-vehicle crash, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Five people were injured in the crash that involved at least four vehicles on Interstate 5, between state Route 52 and Gilman Drive, shortly before 8 a.m.

Lanes were closed as emergency crews cleared the wreckage, and state Route 52 also was backed up, the CHP reported.

Shortly after 8:30 a.m., a pregnant woman on the way to her doctor got off state Route 52 at Regents Road and gave birth in a parking lot at Marian Bear Memorial Park, before paramedics could reach her.

Mother and baby appeared fine but were taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital to be checked out, she said.

Five people were injured in the crash, two seriously, and four were taken to hospitals, according to a San Diego fire-rescue dispatcher.

The two men who were seriously injured were standing in front of a disabled sedan that was struck by another car that veered off Interstate 5 in University City, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The men, ages 27 and 30, were northbound on the freeway in a black Honda Civic that began having engine problems near Gilman Drive shortly before 8 a.m., according to the CHP.

The driver pulled over on the center shoulder and got out along with his companion to look under the hood. A short time later, a silver Honda Civic drifted out of the far left-hand northbound lane and struck the back end of the broken-down car, pushing it forward into the two men.

Moments later, the driver of a Chevrolet pickup truck was unable to keep his vehicle from crashing into the silver Civic.

Medics took the two men hit by the parked sedan to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla for treatment of "major" trauma, according to the Highway Patrol.

The two left-hand northbound lanes of the interstate were closed in the area for about two hours to allow for investigation and cleanup.
