Sidewalk cafes an improvement

We believe that the new sidewalk structures for the "4 Cafes" are a significant improvement to the termite-invested wood structures and littered-cracked sidewalks, which they replaced. We appreciate progress for the betterment of all to enjoy, such as a public restaurant. Thank you to these businesses for making Del Mar an even better place to visit and bring guests.

City should define parking spaces

With the economy devastating many us, including our beautiful city, we need to think outside the box as to how to create revenue. I did a simple experiment in front of my own house. Realizing that people when parking do not think about other cars looking for spaces, I made four distinguished parking spots. Usually, only three cars would park there, because of the haphazard way the first car parked. Do you realize that people do not pull forward, leaving the space behind them? They just park however they like. Living in the beach area, I constantly see cars driving around looking for spaces. On my walks, I can define three to four parking spots on a given side of the street that could have been made available. My suggestion is that the city spend a little money defining the maximum parking spots on the streets in the beach area. Those people that do not park in the defined spot would be given a citation, such as $35. This saves unsightliness of meters and creates an instant flow of revenue into the city's coffers. My parking spots are perfect for a SUV, truck or a compact car. Check it out.

Orchids, onions for sidewalk cafes

ORCHIDS go to the Americana and Jimmy O's sidewalk cafes for their excellent design and artful articulation. The design follows through with the attractive brick work of the existing Americana sidewalk cafe on Camino del Mar and is a significant upgrade to the previous unattractive fence railing and longtime metal news racks. Additionally, both have been held well back to provide a wide pathway for pedestrians and have plans to attractively landscape the area.

ONIONS for the two sidewalk cafes at Del Mar Pizza and Sbiccas. Where was the Del Mar Planning Department to allow or recommend to the City Council sidewalk cafes that make the walkway so tight as to crowd the pedestrians and lose the openness? Not only do they destroy the openness of passage, but they are unsightly concrete block constructions and provide no landscape. What was the Del Mar planning board thinking? Where was the City Council on this one?
