Do you Shiatsu?

Shiatsu, which translates to “finger pressure,” is a Japanese-originated, Chinese medicine-based practice that works to amplify a body’s own ability to heal itself.

Though the practice is designed to restore the body’s balance and energy flow, you don’t need to “believe in” qi or bodily harmony to benefit from Shiatsu. The technique is deeply relaxing and helps to relieve stress, pain, and even illness in some instances.

Using the fingers, thumbs, and palms to apply pressure to various points of the body, Shiatsu promotes energy flow by stimulating the circulatory, lymphatic, and hormonal systems. A Shiatsu massage helps treat joint problems, sciatica, acute and chronic back and neck pain, as well as pain from sprains or arthritis. Poor posture can be aided with a Shiatsu treatment, and therapy can help increase range of motion and coordination, especially when combining acupressure and assisted-stretching techniques to help restore bone and muscle structure.

Shiatsu can also be used to treat sinusitis and bronchitis utilizing pressure points to stimulate the blocked and stressed passageways.

Practitioners of Shiatsu treat ailments similar to those of physiotherapy, osteopathy, and lymphatic drainage, although they approach physical health conditions as the result of blockages and imbalances in the body’s natural energy flow. Whether you choose Shiatsu as your primary treatment or as an accompaniment to another medically based treatment, Shiatsu simply can help you feel better.

People receive Shiatsu for help with the following:

  • Improved circulation
  • Headache relief
  • Arthritis relief
  • Neck and shoulder pain or stiffness
  • Help with healing a sprain or other injury
  • Treatment for insomnia
  • Reduced stress
  • Depression relief
  • Respiratory problems
  • Bowel trouble, morning sickness, or other digestive disorders
  • Menstrual problems
  • Restoring the body’s energy, especially to recover from fatigue and overall weakness

Massages, including Shiatsu, are effective in returning the body to optimal health by reducing stress and strain on muscles and joints, whether the strain comes from emotional or physical stress, sickness, or an injury. Too often, the body gets neglected because there “just isn’t enough time in the day.” However, when physical wellbeing is improved, productivity and overall quality of life are improved.
