Deputy-involved crash ends chase in East County

A pursuit with a wanted parolee ended Thursday morning when the fleeing man crashed into deputy then took off in Lakeside, sheriff’s officials said.

The deputy tried to pull the 26-year-old man over near North Second Street and Naranca Avenue in El Cajon, but the parolee sped off, sheriff’s Lt. Glenn Giannantonio said. The deputy gave chase, shortly before 8:45 a.m., and pursued the parolee on several side streets in the area.

When the chase reached Winter Gardens Boulevard at Woodside Avenue, near state Route 67, the parolee’s vehicle collided with another vehicle, Sgt. Cliff Rinder said.

The fleeing suspect then backed up and crashed his vehicle into the deputy’s patrol car. After that collision, the parolee drove off. The deputy tried to follow, but then crashed into the vehicle the parolee had initially hit, Rinder said.

Neither the deputy nor the driver of the other vehicle was injured in the crash, although both cars sustained minor damage.

As of 4 p.m., the parolee was still on the loose.
