Southwestern College breaks ground on performing arts center, police station

Southwestern College broke ground this week on a performing arts center and police station — two projects that cost a total of almost $70 million.

The performing arts center will go up at East H Street and Otay Lakes Road, next to the new Wellness and Aquatics Complex that opened in January. The $52.7 million center will include a 500-seat theater, classrooms and a 151-seat black box theater.

The project will be paid for with funds from Proposition R, a $389 million bond measure voters approved in 2008, and Proposition Z, a $400 million bond measure approved in 2016.

Across campus, near parking lot C, the college police station will house an armory, security monitoring systems, dispatch center, meeting rooms and parking for police vehicles.

Proposition R will fund the $6.8 million project.

The college celebrated the groundbreaking of the two buildings Monday.
