The cast and crew of the upcoming Village Players production, "The Selfish Giant," are hard at work getting into character.
The rehearsals have the actors playing hopscotch, dolls, baseball and Red Rover, Red Rover - all that on top of memorizing lines and learning blocking.
"This cast of kids and adults is one of the most talented I have ever worked with," director Margie Wood said. "I was a little anxious about staging this with so many kids but they have surprised me with their concentration and focus." They bring their own creativity to the show as well, she said.
The Village Players, a community theater group at the Village Presbyterian Church, will perform the Oscar Wilde play on Saturday, March 14, and Sunday, March 15. Show times will be at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
"The Selfish Giant" tells the story of a giant, played by John Chalmers, who has a beautiful garden but refuses to share it with playful children. The characters Frost, Snow, Hail and North Wind - performed by Scott Shepherd, Erica Padgett, Claire Worsey and Peter Gustini - take up residence in the garden while summer and spring arrive everywhere else.
The "no trespassing" sign on the giant's garden gate can't keep the laughter of children out for long.
The cast of children includes: Albert Shepherd, Elizabeth Zollars, Kylie Duncan, Madison Gustini, Rachel Dovsky, Christopher Gustini, Scott Carson, Austin Edwards, Jack Frimodog, Alna Hofmeyr, Grace See, David and James Worsey, Kevin Fernandez, Ally Brumfield, Johanna Bible, Ali Acosta, Alexa Sorenson and Isabella Ojeda.
The performances are free of charge but donations are always accepted. The church is located at 6225 Paseo Delicias. For more information, call 756-2441.
