This football team has a better record than the San Diego Chargers, who sit at 4-3. They even have a better record than state champion Cathedral Catholic. They're the Torrey Pines Pop Warner Pee Wee Golden Falcons, and they have gone 10-0 this season en route to a Palomar Conference Championship last Saturday afternoon at Cathedral Catholic.
The Golden Falcons made it look easy, defeating the previously undefeated Poway Titans 28-16. By halftime, they were already up 22-0. A fumble recovery in the closing seconds of the first quarter led to a rushing touchdown for quarterback Chase Fanning. Torrey Pines gave up two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but a miraculous Poway comeback was not in the script.
"I can't say enough about my guys," coach Steve LoCicero said of his team of 9- to 11-year-olds. "This is an amazing group of kids. This was a really big team effort."
The Golden Falcons also scored their first defensive touchdown of the year with a pick-six by Matt Feeler — a heads-up interception he ran 50 yards into the end zone.
"We all put in a lot of work, even at practice," said Feeler, a middle linebacker. "We never stopped."
"Everyone on the team is friends. We don't ever fight: we're all together," quarterback Fanning said.
The Golden Falcons will next play in the WesCon Regional Championships on Saturday against a Mt. Baldy team.
