When we think of Alzheimer’s disease, we don’t often think about how geriatric managers can improve the quality of the lives of those around us. It’s certainly understandable – when Alzheimer’s is diagnosed, it permeates the individual and family in dramatic ways, and we often lose sight of how to cope with the disease.
In a new study, Alzheimer’s is once again in the spotlight, reminding all of us how deeply affective the disease can be. According to a recent article at the Chicago Sun-Times, we learn that Alzheimer’s disease is difficult not only on the individual and families, but for caregivers, too. And when caregivers are the family themselves, the strain becomes even harder.
Cognitive impairment is the strongest predictor of whether an individual will require future care in a home – far greater than cancer, heart disease or other common ailments associated with mature age according to the article. And when it comes to long-term care, families take on that responsibility due in part to budget and a sense of dedication to the individual. But as we learn that may not always prove to be the best choice.
“It’s astonishing,” said Marc Wortmann, executive director of Alzheimer’s Disease International, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. “What many…try to do is keep people away from care homes because they say that’s cheaper. Yes it’s cheaper for the government or the health system, but it’s not always the best solution.”
