A controversial Torrey Hills housing development was approved yesterday by San Diego City Council 7 to 1, with Donna Frye voting against it.
A Coast Income Properties-proposed 484-unit condominium project on 13 acres off West Ocean Air Drive was given the go-ahead despite criticism from neighbors and the Torrey Hills Community Planning Board. Residents and the board felt the project was too dense and didn't fit the character of the area's other rental communities.
In May, the board had requested that the developer trim the project to a maximum of 380 units and limit the height to three stories. Coast Income Properties would not meet that compromise but is giving $1 million to the community toward a recreation facility such as a YMCA in Torrey Hills Park.
The lot represents the last developable space in Torrey Hills and is on the corner of Calle Mar de Mariposa, near Torrey Hills School.
