- Coach Brent Thorne had to wait 23 years, but he finally has his state championship. The Torrey Pines girls cross country team last weekend became the first state champion from the San Diego section in eight years.
Megan Morgan led the Falcons, running the 3.1-mile course at Woodward Park in 17 minutes and 16 seconds, 10 seconds behind Rancho Bernardo's Molly Grabill.
The Falcons won the title with 134 points, edging out Temecula Great Oak and San Clemente, which tied for second with 137 points.
Alli Billmeyer placed fourth for the Falcons, clocking a 17:46 time, and Ashlyn Dadkhah (17:56) placed sixth.
Rachel Hiraoka (19:08) and Kelsey O'Connell (19:27) placed 52nd and 70th for the Falcons.
- Whatever Cathedral Catholic lacks in star power, the Dons have more than made up for with balance and efficiency.
Those strengths were apparent in the Dons' 27-6 victory over El Capitan in a San Diego Section Div. III quarterfinal on Nov. 27.
After graduating one of the state's most prolific running backs (Tyler Gaffney, who's now at Stanford), the two-time defending section champions and reigning state champions got major contributions from several skilled players along with some dominant defensive play.
The Dons set the tone for the victory early in the first quarter, when quarterback Max Brewer completed a 15-yard scoring pass to Chance Early.
Brewer led a ball-control offense, completing 10 of 17 pass attempts for 123 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. His scoring pass to Early was his longest completion.
Jordan Lance rushed for 79 yards and one touchdown on nine carries to lead a Dons ground game that combined for 202 yards.
Jonny Martin rushed for 77 yards and one touchdown on 18 carries and Derek Thomas rushed for 30 yards on six carries.
Sam Zimmer led the Dons defensively with eight tackles, and Ray Krikel and Eric Sapp each had seven tackles.
Mustafa Jalil had six tackles and led the Dons with 1 ? sacks.
The Dons won for the fifth straight time as they improved their overall record for the season to 10-1.
- Santa Fe Christian defeated Olympian 40-14 in a Div. IV quarterfinal on Nov. 27.
Sam Hoekstra rushed for 129 yards and one touchdown on 13 carries, and Eagles quarterback Keaton Giannotti was involved in three touchdowns (two rushing, one passing) to lead the Eagles.
Giannotti rushed for 82 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries, and was 2-for-2 passing for 62 yards and one touchdown.
The Eagles broke a scoreless tie midway through the first quarter when Matt Kirwan kicked a 33-yard field goal.
Giannotti scored on a run from the 7 and Kurt Luedtke scored on a 22-yard run before the end of the half to give the Eagles a 17-0 lead going into the intermission.
Hoekstra scored on an 84-yard run and Giannotti scored on a run from the 2 in the third quarter to make it 30-0.
The Eagles broke the game open in the fourth quarter, when Giannotti completed a 23-yard scoring pass to Owen McClish and Kirwan kicked second field goal of the game, a 37-yarder, that made it 40-7.
The Eagles improved their overall record for the season to 10-1 as they won their third straight game.
- Torrey Pines lost to La Costa Canyon 21-7 in a Div. I quarterfinal.
Falcons quarterback John Cabot completed 5 of 9 pass attempts for 98 yards with no interceptions.
Cabot scored the Falcons only touchdown on a run from the 2 in the first quarter that tied the game at 7-7.
John Wilson led the Falcons with 58 rushing yards on 11 carries and Joseph Driscoll rushed for 38 yards on seven carries.
The Falcons fell to 5-6-1 overall for the season.
- Defending Div. III state champion Cathedral Catholic closed to within one victory of playing for another title.
The Dons defeated Mayfield of Pasadena 3-1 (18-25, 25-15, 25-23, 25-210) in a regional semifinal on Nov. 28.
They were scheduled to play Cerritos in a Southern California regional final on Dec. 1.
Taylor Milton had 15 kills to lead the Dons and Kelly Reeves added 13 kills.
The Dons improved their overall record for the season to 29-7.
- San Diego Jewish Academy's historic season ended with a 3-2 (25-22, 15-25, 25-20, 22-25, 8-15) loss to Saddleback Valley Christian in a Div. V state tournament game on Nov. 24.
The Lions, who were making their first state tournament appearance in school history, fell to 21-3.
- Torrey Pines lost to Clovis West 3-2 (25-20, 25-10, 24-26, 24-26, 15-9) in a Div. I state tournament game on Nov. 24.
Katie Dutchman had 18 kills to lead the Falcons, and Alyse Hensley added 12 kills.
