Football Cathedral Catholic continued its march to what by now seems to be an inevitable return to Qualcomm Stadium to defend its San Diego Section Div. III title, as the Dons overcame an early deficit to pull out a wild 58-32 victory over Lincoln of San Diego in an Eastern League opener for both teams on Oct. 17.
Standout senior running back Tyler Gaffney turned in a game for the ages to lead the Dons, rushing for 336 yards on 36 carries and scoring six touchdowns.
The Lions, who were winless last season, improved their overall record for the season to 5-0.
Ian Bielas rushed for 134 yards on 14 carries to lead the Lions, and Hunter Spiegel gained 81 yards on 10 carries. Yosef Mizrachi rushed for 75 yards on six carries for SDJA.
Cathedral Catholic improved its overall record for the season to 6-0 and extended the defending Div. III champions winning streak going back to last season to 13 games.
Gaffney's 24 touchdowns on the year rank him among the state leaders.
The Dons were trailing 18-14 in the second quarter when Gaffney scored four touchdowns to give the Dons a commanding 42-24 lead going into the intermission.
Dons quarterback Parker Hipp completed 13 of 20 pass attempts for 267 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
Sam Hoekstra rushed for 122 yards on 11 carries and scored two touchdowns for the Eagles, who won for the fourth time in five games to improve to 4-2 overall for the season.

Torrey Pines' backfield tandem of Lenny Magill and Robert Murray combined for more than 350 rushing yards in a losing cause for the Falcons, who suffered a 55-28 loss to Escondido in an Avocado League opener for both teams on Oct. 17.
The loss dropped Torrey Pines overall record for the season to 2-4.
Westview's season opening six game winning streak came to an abrupt halt on Oct. 17, when the Wolverines suffered a 49-7 loss to Oceanside in a Valley League opener for both teams.
Westview quarterback Tommy Hansen completed 13 of 21 pass attempts for 130 yards with one touchdown and four interceptions.
The Wolverines fell to 6-1 overall for the season.
Volleyball Santa Fe Christian made easy work of Tri-City Christian of Vista as the Eagles improved to 15-3 overall for the season with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 26-24) victory in a Coastal North League opener for both teams on Oct. 17.
Alexa Long had 22 assists to lead the Eagles, and Annie Francis had 10 kills.
Sophomore standout Samantha Cash had 20 kills to lead Canyon Crest Academy to a 3-1 (25-9, 20-25, 25-17, 25-8) victory over University City of San Diego in a Coastal South League game on Oct. 17.
The Ravens improved to 2-1 in league and 16-5 overall for the season.
Cathedral Catholic survived a tough challenge from Scripps Ranch, as the Dons rallied for a 3-2 (24-26, 25-11, 26-24, 27-29, 15-10) on Oct. 17 to remain unbeaten in Western League play.
Lexi Williamson had 28 kills and Kelly Reeves had 24 kills to lead the Dons, and setter Rachel Oemcke had 51 assists.
The Dons improved to 7-0 in league and 15-2 overall.
Cross country Megan Morgan's standout individual performance highlighted an outstanding performance for the Torrey Pines, leading the Falcons to a first place finish on the girls' circuit of the Southern California Invitational meet on Oct. 18 at Guajome Park in Oceanside.
The Falcons' boys' team placed second.
Morgan ran the rugged 2.4-mile course in 13 minutes and 58 seconds, taking first place in the No. 1 division race and posting the fastest recorded time in on the girls' side.
Torrey Pines' Alli Billmeyer finished first clocking a 13:59, finishing second overall to Morgan.
On the boys' side, Andrew Ward placed first in the No. 4 division, running the 3.1-mile course in 16:39. James Aliamus placed fifth for the Falcons in the No. 2 division in 16:52, and Matt Lenehan placed second in the No. 3 division with a 16:53 performance.
Water polo Tanner Miller scored seven goals and Andrew Johnson added five goals to lead first place Torrey Pines to a 23-3 thrashing of San Pasqual in an Avocado League game on Oct. 17.
Falcons goalie Eric Hsu recorded eight saves.
The Falcons improved to 4-0 in league 10-6 overall for the season.
