The La Jolla girls' soccer team topped Cathedral Catholic on Friday, 4-1.
Steven Hyde
Girls basketball:
Cathedral Catholic competed in some of the toughest nonleague tournaments on the West Coast in preparation for Western League play.

If the early returns are any indication, the Dons appear to have benefited from the experience.

Cathedral Catholic trounced Lincoln of San Diego 64-10 in a league opener for both teams on Jan. 6, and then went on to defeat Scripps Ranch of San Diego 72-51 on Jan. 9.

The Dons held their own against elite competition, compiling a 7-6 record playing a schedule that included last month's Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, Ariz., and Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions.

Standout Victoria Lippert scored 30 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Dons in the Scripps Ranch game.

Lippert, a 5-foot-11 guard who is considered a Div. I prospect, is averaging 20.4 points and 8.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game.

Katie Dollard scored 18 points and had six rebounds for the Dons, and Megan McClurg added 11 points.

Torrey Pines' Heather Serven has found her touch at what appears to be the most opportune of times for the Falcons.

As the Falcons prepare for their Jan. 20 Avocado League opener against Fallbrook, Serven has emerged as one of the area's most dominant scorers.

She averaged 27.4 points during a three-game stretch - all Falcons victories - highlighted by a 30-point performance in a 69-36 thrashing of Santa Fe Christian of Solana Beach on Jan. 7.

Serven caught fire in a 64-56 victory over Sweetwater of National City, scoring 27 points in the Dec. 31 San Marco Excalibur Classic contest.

She poured in 26 points in a big 57-51 victory over Rancho Bernardo on Jan. 9.

Megan Fennessy grabbed 13 rebounds and scored seven points in the Rancho Bernardo game, and Sarah Lawrence scored seven points and had five assists.

The Falcons improved their overall record for the season to 9-7.

Canyon Crest Academy extended its winning streak to three games as the Ravens defeated Valley Center 52-40 in a nonleague game on Jan. 9.

Meghan Brown scored 16 points and had five rebounds to lead the Ravens, and Julia Brew added 15 points and three assists.

Alex Brunt-Pluta led the Ravens with nine rebounds, and Tasha Quintana pulled down eight boards.

The Ravens improved their overall record for the season to 7-7.

Aliya Luther scored 12 points and Aliza Grossman added 11 points to lead San Diego Jewish Academy to its third straight win, a 37-29 nonleague victory over Calvary Christian Academy of Chula Vista on Jan. 8.

The Lions defeated Borrego Springs 49-29 in a nonleague game Jan. 7. The Borrego Springs game followed a three-week layoff that went back to Dec. 18, when the Lions beat Escondido Charter 53-46.

Luther scored 16 points to lead the Lions in the Borrego Springs game, and Alexa Katz added 15 points.

Boys basketball:
Colin Porter scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Torrey Pines to a 59-41 nonleague victory over Rancho Bernardo on Jan. 9.

Joe Rahon and Nick Kerr each added 12 point for the Falcons, who improved their overall record for the season to 12-2.

Santa Fe Christian suffered a tough 55-52 nonleague loss to Oceanside on Jan. 10 that pitted two of the county's hottest teams.

Karl Holmlund scored 23 points to lead the Eagles, and Ryan Moore added 10 points.

Santa Fe Christian fell to 11-3 overall for the season. Oceanside won for the eighth time in nine games to improve to 11-2.

Canyon Crest Academy defeated Army-Navy of Carlsbad 66-53 in a nonleague game on Jan. 9.

Ahmed Hassan scored 21 points to lead the Ravens, who set the tone early, outscoring their opponent 23-8 in the first quarter and taking a 41-21 lead into the intermission.

Tyler Cassett contributed 16 points for CCA, and Jordan Capon added 14 points.

Andrew Retzer scored 15 points and Jacob Katz added points to lead San Diego Jewish Academy to a 52-15 thrashing of Calvary Christian of Escondido in a nonleague game on Jan. 8.

The Lions improved their overall record for the season to 6-3.

Boys soccer:
Red-hot Torrey Pines hiked its record to 7-1 as the Falcons defeated Otay Ranch of Chula Vista 3-0 in a nonleague game Jan. 7.

Konor Collins, Michael King and Alex Ploye-Evans each scored one goal to lead the Falcons.

Sean Callahan scored San Diego Jewish Academy's only goal as the Lions played to a 1-1 deadlock with Borrego Springs in a nonleague game on Jan. 7.

Girls soccer:
Chelsea Small scored one goal and assisted another to lead Torrey Pines to a 3-0 victory over Rancho Bernardo on Jan. 8.

Olivia Buechler and Alexandra Bailey each contributed one goal apiece for the Falcons, who won their third straight game.

Falcons goalie Annie Heaton had five saves.

The Falcons improved their overall record for the season to 7-1-2.
