Cathedral volleyball team falls to La Jolla

Volleyball:
Cathedral Catholic lost to La Jolla 3-1 (25-18, 25-23, 24-26, 25-23) in the San Diego Section Div. III title game on May 30 at Cathedral Catholic High.

Chase Baker had 13 kills and Ryan McGlaughlin added 11 kills in defeat for the Dons.
The Dons defeated Canyon Crest Academy 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-17) in the semifinals on May 26.

Baker led the Dons with 17 kills.

Ryan Arthur and Ryan Kroner each had seven kills in defeat for the Ravens.

The Dons conclude their season with a 26-10 overall mark.

Baseball:
Cathedral Catholic breezed through the first two rounds of the San Diego Section Div. III double-elimination baseball playoffs, winning by a combined margin of 20 runs.

The Dons opened with a 13-3 thrashing of Mission Bay on May 27 and then went on to defeat University City by 14-4 two days later.

Casey Munoz sparked the Dons offense in the Mission Bay game, going 3 for 3 with a homer and three RBI.

Brandon Healy and Tommy Cheek each had two hits.

The Dons scored at least one run in every inning in support of pitcher Jonathan Meyer, who pitched a complete game for the win.

Meyer struck out five batters and allowed three runs (two earned) on 12 hits and no walks.
Tyler Gaffney and Matt Moynihan combined for 10 RBI in the University City game.

Gaffney was 3 for 5 with two homers and six RBI, and Moynihan had two hits including a homer and drove in four runs.

Dons starter Ryan Wilkins pitched six innings for the win. He struck out eight batters and allowed four runs on eight hits and no walks.

The Dons tallied 16 hits, with five players contributing at least two hits.

Wilkins also homered for the Dons.

The Dons have won 14 of their last 16 games. They improved their overall record for the season to 24-6.

Torrey Pines was eliminated from the Div. I playoffs after the Falcons lost to Vista 25-5 on May 30.

The Falcons lost to Vista 5-3 in a playoff opener for both teams on May 27 but they lived to play another day after beating Mira Mesa of San Diego 6-3 two days later.

Josh Sabourin had three hits to lead the Falcons in the Mira Mesa game.

The Falcons concluded their season with a 22-10 overall record.

Santa Fe Christian's post-season run ended with a 10-8 loss to Madison in the Div. IV playoffs on May 30.

The Eagles opened their post-season with a decisive 9-0 victory over La Jolla Country Day on May 26 and they improved to 2-0 in the playoffs after beating Madison 7-5 on May 27 for their 10th consecutive victory.

That streak was snapped on May 29, when they suffered their first post-season loss, 4-3 to Horizon.

Nolan Gannon had a 16-game hitting streak snapped in the season-ending loss.

Bobby Zarubin, the team's leading hitter with a .448 batting average, was 7 for 16 in the playoffs but was hitless in second Madison game.

The Eagles conclude their season with a 21-8 overall record.

Softball:
Torrey Pines' post-season run ended with a 3-1 loss to El Camino of Oceanside in a Div. I playoff game on May 27.

A day earlier, the Falcons' six-game winning streak ended with a 7-0 loss to Rancho Bernardo of San Diego.

Lauren Hynes' double was among just two Falcons hits in the Oceanside game.
The Falcons conclude their season with a 24-7 overall mark.

Cathedral Catholic's season-ending second post-season loss came at the hands of University City 3-0 in a Div. III playoff game.

The Dons opened the playoffs with a 10-3 victory over Brawley on May 23 and defeated University City 4-3 three days later for their ninth consecutive win.

But that streak ended when the Dons lost to Santana of Santee 7-4 on May 28.

Dominique Madruga had three hits to lead the Dons in the first University City game, and Beth Smentana and Lauren Dockrill each added two hits.

The Dons conclude their season with a 19-3 overall record.

Lacrosse:
Torrey Pines lost to archrival La Costa Canyon of Carlsbad in the San Diego Section Div. I championship match on May 30 at Helix High in La Mesa.

Becky Trees and Annalyse Eggold each scored two goals in defeat for the Falcons.

Torrey Pines goalie Carrie Yang had nine saves.

The Falcons advanced to the title game after defeating Coronado 9-8 in the semifinals on May 28.

Becky Trees and Katie Trees each scored three goals to lead the Falcons, and Yang had eight saves.

The Falcons conclude the season with a 17-8 overall record.
