The North Shore Girls Softball 12-under Gold All Star team continued their run towards Nationals by sweeping the ASA North San Diego District Tournament last weekend in San Marcos and being crowned 2009 District Champions.
North Shore 12 Gold went a perfect 5-0 in the double elimination tournament featuring a dozen 12u Gold All Star teams from the North San Diego County region.
The toughest game of the weekend was against rival San Dieguito, where North Shore escaped with a 4-3 nail biter. On Sunday North Shore 12 Gold swept district powerhouse Poway 7-1 and 9-0 to capture the District Championship.
The district championship was truly a total team effort for North Shore 12 Gold, displaying speed, power, defense and pitching in dominating their North County rivals.
Caitlin O'Farrell was brilliant again in the circle in shutting out Poway yielding just two hits. At the plate Emily Wolking led the way hitting .727 for the weekend with eight hits, six RBIs, and four stolen bases. Mariel Cathcart hit .538 while driving in five runs.
Tierra Eshom hit .444 with six RBIs, while Emma Wong hit .438 with seven hits and four stolen bases. Savannah Kelly hit .429 with six RBIs as well. Hannah Gilliland and Wong were outstanding on defense for North Shore 12 Gold.
The District title moved North Shore 12 Gold to 30-6 on the season, with five championship finals in seven weeks.
North Shore 12 Gold now prepares for the Southern California State Tournament in Lancaster July 10-12 where they will face 31 other top teams from eight ASA districts.
A good showing at the State Tournament and the Gold will become the first North Shore team in the league's 20-year history to qualify for the ASA Nationals Tournament in Portland, Oregon July 27-Aug. 2.
