Local grapplers take on visiting Japanese team

La Costa Canyon High School hosted a cultural exchange Jan. 9 between Japan and the Unites States. This culture exchange did not take place in the classroom, dance floor or in a stadium — this exchange took place on a wrestling mat.

La Costa Canyon wrestling head coach Dwayne Buth arranged the visit with the Japanese wrestling team, which split its time between Nevada and California. After winning all of its matches in Nevada, the Japanese team traveled to Carlsbad. At LCC, the 13 Japanese wrestlers were paired with local wrestlers from La Costa Canyon, Canyon Crest Academy, Mission Hills, and Torrey Pines High School. Carmel Valley wrestlers Joe Anthony, Ben Carney, Jordan Machike, Drake Taylor and Peter “Pierre” Thomas were among the wrestlers.

Matches were held in both freestyle and folkstyle dual wrestling and the Japanese team dominated in some hard-fought battles. After the matches, the wrestlers had a gift exchange and took pictures.

In a separate event, the Torrey Pines varsity wrestlers finished 12th out of 32 teams in the Mission Hills Varsity Tournament on Jan. 6. Josh Hornilla and Paulo Dominice finished 6th place while Pierre Thomas finished 4th. That same day, at the Escondido Junior Varsity tournament, wrestler Alex Howell finished second.

On Jan. 15, junior varsity wrestlers David Berstein and Jordan Machike won first place and Mike Cava took second at the Ivan Olsen JV/Girls Tournament. Emily Sway took first in the tournament.
