Forward together: Agent makes masks for co-workers and clients
When Daria Carey, a real estate agent at Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty in Del Mar, realized early on that everyone was going to be dealing with COVID-19 for some time she got busy making masks for family, friends and co-workers. Carey started quarantining earlier than most in San Diego since her family in the Bay Area had already done so. While she was on floor duty at Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty’s Solana Beach office, a passerby with his dog said, “you should be home,” and this got her thinking.

With the real estate industry declared an essential business in California, and masks almost impossible to obtain, Carey offered to make some for her manager and his mentor team. She had quality fabric, a skill set, and a sewing machine. Her request for masks went from 12 to 68 in just a few hours. She was thrilled by the response and was happy to be of service and provide not only a functional mask but a fashionable, comfortable new accessory to help keep people safe.
Keeping with the Sotheby’s International Realty brand colors, she is also making masks using a navy blue pinstripe fabric for a professional look. “When social distancing with clients,” says Realtor David Thayer, Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty,” Daria’s mask takes my business to the next level.”
The masks are washable, have a sleeve to insert a filter for extra protection. Carey uses a wire for the nose bridge to ensure a snug fit.
“I did not start this project to make money. I saw a way to use my skills to help keep my fellow agents and our clients safe while helping to keep our business moving,” says Carey. “I find it therapeutic to be creative and it provides me with an opportunity to stay connected and help others during this time of need.”

Carey learned to sew at the age of 11 from her grandmother. She continually updates her masks to perfect the fit and comfort and is now on version 3.0. She makes sizes for babies, children and adults and often includes an extra mask with her deliveries for her clients to give to their local grocery store employee, doctors, or nurses, someone at higher risk for the coronavirus or any person on the front lines.
Word of her talents has spread, and she is working harder than ever — when she is not out showing property.
Carey has a big heart and is using her skills to help others stay safe and connected while continuing to serve their clients and keep the real estate business moving forward.
