TPHS Music Department Falcon Finale Concert
The Torrey Pines High School Music Department held its Spring Concert, the “Falcon Finale,” June 4-5 at the Canyon Crest Academy Proscenium Theater. The Guitar Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, and Choir gave their final performances for the academic year.
The Guitar Ensemble of 30 students just began playing in September and have come a long way. Musical director Amy Gelb joined in their performance, which featured solos from several students.
The Wind Ensemble played lively tunes, including Fiesta de Los Toros, and music from The Incredibles. Senior Matthew Carpenter was presented an award for his leadership and dedication to the band.
The Choir gave an outstanding performance with songs including Take Me Home, Rest, and Summertime. Senior Tiffany Salatino was presented an award for her contributions to the choir.
Advanced Orchestra presented a beautiful octet featuring Erica Hwang, Jacey Yang, Stella Chung, Sara Maxman, Rachel Lian, Daniel Xu, Elliot Kim, and Kevin Song, performing Mendelssohn. The full orchestra played Don Quixote by Telemann, Rhythm Dances by Brian Balmages, and Dance of the Tumblers by Rimsky-Korsakov. Seniors Erica Hwang, Sean Yang, Chloe Ko, Jimmy Fahr, Daniel Xu, Rachel Lian, Joshua Hornilla, Abigail Egan, Sean Wu, Yunqing Gao, and Elaine Song gave their final Torrey performances to an adoring audience.
Jazz Band completed the showcase with six varied pieces. Seniors Hannah Berman Schneider (baritone sax), Yechan Choi (trumpet), Lenni Elbe (trombone), Rohith Kodukula (flute), Sofia Nocito (vocals), and Andrea Zhao (piano) gave their final performances. In the midst of an outstanding solo, saxophonist Matthew Jiang (11) incurred a nosebleed! He persevered through his solo, and received a rousing round of applause. Sofia Nocito gave the audience dazzling vocals and stage presence on Indian Summer and two others. A funky piece, The Chicken, featured solos from four seniors.
