The Torrey Pines High School Music Department held its Fall Concert Oct. 29 at Canyon Crest Academy Proscenium Theater, directed by Amy Gelb.
The concert featured performances by Chorus, Advanced Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band. Chorus sang five songs, which included a solo from Nola Fritz on “Somewhere” from West Side Story (Bernstein/Sondheim), percussion accompaniment from Cormac Cadden, Noah Garcia, and Caleb Sheffield on “Sisi Kishangilia,” and bass and drums by Sam and Caleb Sheffield on “Take Five (Brubeck).
Orchestra blew away the packed theater with Edvard Grieg and Richard Meyer pieces. Wind Ensemble covered John Philip Sousa’s “The Black Horse Troop,” Gustav Holst’s “Brook Green Suite,” and Brian Balmages’ “Shadow Waltzes.”
Jazz Band closed out the night with incredible performances of “Boy from Ipanema” (Jobim), “Rock This Town” (Setzer), “At Last” (Warren & Gordon), “Mofongo” (Mintzer), “On The Street Where You Live” (Lerner) and “Superstition” (Wonder), including vocals from Bella Russo and solos from Matthew Jiang (alto sax), Caleb Sheffield (drums), Daniel Ju (tenor sax), Haozhen Dai (keys), James Freedman (trumpet), and Nicole Pustilnik (violin).
