Suspicion, suspense fill the air at North Coast Rep’s ‘Holmes & Watson’

North Coast Repertory Theatre is challenging even the most astute mystery buffs to solve the riddle posed by Holmes & Watson. Cleverly conceived by Jeffrey Hatcher, this West Coast premiere dares Dr. Watson to discern which of three men is the missing Sherlock Holmes. Fast-paced, thrilling and full of twists and turns, it promises to keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

Holmes & Watson previews begin Wednesday, Oct. 17. Opening Night on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 8 p.m. There will be a special talkback on Friday, Oct. 26, with the cast and artistic director. It will play Wednesdays at 7 p.m., Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. with Sundays at 7 p.m. through Nov. 18.

‘A Day in the Life of Naval Aviator’ lecture at Del Mar Library

“A Day in the Life of a Naval Aviator” lecture by the U.S.S. Midway Museum will be hosted by Del Mar Library on Thursday, Oct. 25, at 6 p.m. The speaker will be Richard Earnest, a decorated Vietnam-era fighter pilot, volunteer with the U.S.S. Midway Museum, and a former mayor of Del Mar.

RSF Chabad course addresses dissonance between religion and western values

This November, Rabbi Levi Raskin of Chabad Jewish Center of Rancho Santa Fe will offer “Wrestling with Faith,” a new six-session course by the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI), that openly addresses common challenges people have in their relationship with God.

Beginning Monday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. participants in the course will grapple with issues that many struggle with, including beliefs in Judaism that seem primitive or outdated, reconciling scientific findings with ideas that cannot be proven in a lab, and the role of religion regarding gender roles, relationship choices, and other such controversial issues.

Sharp Healthcare to present free workshop on heart disease in Carmel Valley

Sharp HealthCare and the City of San Diego are presenting a free seminar on heart disease, the leading cause of death in the U.S. The event will be held Thursday, Oct. 11, 6 to 7 p.m., at Ocean Air Recreation Center in Carmel Valley (4770 Fairport Way, San Diego, 92130).

October Family Breakfast benefit at St. Therese

The Knights of Columbus at St. Therese of Carmel Catholic Parish will host an October Family Breakfast on Sunday, Oct. 7 from 9:30 - 11 a.m. This is a fundraising event and the beneficiary is The ARC of San Diego. The Arc of San Diego is one of the largest, most comprehensive providers of services to children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in San Diego County.

‘How to create a sustainable yard presentation’ to be held at Del Mar Library

San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy (SDRVC) will talk about its Next to Nature program at Del Mar Library on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m.

Through the Next to Nature program, SDRVC encourages the creation of sustainable yards, especially those that surround preserves, canyons, parks and other open spaces.

The SDRVC is partnering with Heaviland Landscape Management to assist homeowners, community associations and businesses in their efforts to develop areas that are friendly for wildlife and optimize water resources including rainfall and runoff to preserve the integrity of surrounding natural spaces.

Learn more about the Next to Nature Program and how to create a sustainable yard at this workshop. It is the first class of a series that will be ongoing throughout the year.

Author talks at DM Library

The Del Mar Library will present the following author talks in October:

Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 6 p.m: Rosemarie Rubinetti-Cappiello, author of Speaking from Spirit: Inspiring Stories and Messages from Those Who Passed On. Based in Bergen County, NJ, Rubinetti-Cappiello trained at the Arthur Findlay College in Essex, England. She has worked professionally as a Medium/Intuitive/Healer since 2000. A mediumship demonstration will follow the presentation.

Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 6 p.m.: Mickey Brent, author of Broad Awakening. This is Brent’s second novel. Bark in the Park

The City of Solana Beach Parks and Recreation Commission is hosting “Bark in the Park” on Sunday, Oct. 7 from 1 p.m.-4 p.m., at La Colonia Park.

SB art reception

Solana Beach celebrates the centennial of Lake Hodges, a creation that made it possible to irrigate the city’s early farms and neighborhoods, with an exhibit by local artist Kevin Anderson at Solana Beach City Hall, 635 S. Hwy. 101, Solana Beach, Oct. 1 through Nov. 15.

Residents and visitors are invited to an opening reception for the exhibit on Saturday, Oct. 6, from 3 to 7 p.m. featuring two renowned locals, Kevin Anderson and jazz guitarist Peter Sprague.

North Coast Symphony Concert – Celebrating Autumn

CCC Band Concert ‘America the Beautiful’

The Coastal Communities Concert Band thinks any time is a good time to celebrate America. Author to speak at Optimist Club meeting

The Optimist Club of Del Mar – Solana Beach will host keynote speaker John Allcock who will present “Forty Things I Wish I’d Told My Kids,” and a special informative presentation of Sea Change Prepatory School, located in Del Mar, at the monthly dinner meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at Lomas Santa Fe Country Club. Allcock has been a student and teacher of mindfulness for over 15 years. He is a published author and a frequent lecturer on the topic, having been interviewed on over 50 radio and television stations across the country, including many in San Diego.
