Folk band brings American history alive for students at Del Mar Heights
Gemini Junction Acoustic Folk Band performed at Del Mar Heights School on March 6 before 180 third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students.
Del Mar Heights Principal Wendy Wardlow said, "American history came alive for the students at Del Mar Heights School through a wonderful music assembly performed by Gemini Junction, a local folk band. Listening to a live performance of classic American songs helped the children develop a deeper appreciation for our country's rich history represented through song."
Gemini Junction [www.GeminiJunction.com] developed this 40-minute, audience participatory program to teach children about the music and instruments that accompanied the westward migration from the original 13 colonies to the West Coast, covering such topics as wagon trains, the Civil War, slavery, Native Americans, and train robbers.
The band adapted the song selection and narratives to correspond to state standards and enhances learning of 19th century American history through such songs as “John Henry” and “When Johnny Comes Marching Home.”
Gemini Junction is available to present its unique program of Americana at local schools. Contact JT Moring: jt@moring.net.
