Junior lifeguard registration begins Feb. 1

Registration for the 2018 Del Mar Junior Lifeguard programs begins Feb. 1. Summer will be here in no time and the program fills up fast, so parents are encouraged to register their children online to secure a slot and take advantage of discounted pricing. The Web address is:

“In junior lifeguards, we learn all about the ocean, fitness and staying safe,” said Director Turtle Rudolph. “But more than anything, we have fun!”The program is held at 29th Street beach in Del Mar.Junior lifeguards range from 9 through 17 years of age and can enroll in 1-, 2-, 4- or 10-week sessions.

The first sessions begin June 18 with other sessions following throughout the summer. The final 2-week session runs from Aug. 6 to Aug. 17.Little Turtles, a program for up-and-coming junior lifeguards, serves 7- and 8-year-olds with one- and two-week sessions that align with those of the bigger kids and begin on June 18.

Discounts are offered for active-duty military families.All participants must pass a swim test.Junior lifeguards learn techniques for surfing, body boarding and body surfing. They learn rescue board techniques and practice mock rescues. Junior lifeguards are taught to recognize a swimmer in distress and other lifeguarding duties.

Advanced junior lifeguards practice cliff rescues and ride on inflatible rescue boats.While learning to care for others with first aid, CPR and rescue training, junior guards learn the importance of taking care of themselves. The curriculum emphasizes good nutrition, sun protection and physical fitness.

“We are all about having fun, gaining skills and being safe on the beach,” Turtle said.
