Down syndrome groups host Sunday event

Three local organizations are inviting the community to a Picnic in the Park from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day 2022 in San Diego.

The event, hosted by GiGi’s Playhouse San Diego, Down Syndrome Action (DS Action) and the Down Syndrome Association of San Diego, will be held at the Nobel Athletic Fields and Recreation Center in University City, 8810 Judicial Drive, San Diego. The aim is to raise awareness for those with Down syndrome and to celebrate their abilities and contributions.

Plans for the day include live entertainment, a DJ, performances, activities, dancing and demonstrations. Attendees are asked to bring their own picnics, as well as chairs, blankets and shade cover to enjoy the afternoon. Guests are asked to register for this free event by Saturday at https://bit.ly/WDSD2022_SanDiego.

The three hosting organizations work to help people of all abilities through programming, advocacy and wellness resources.

GiGi’s Playhouse San Diego (gigisplayhouse.org/sandiego) provides free therapeutic and educational programs, including one-on-one math and literacy tutoring, speech and language therapies, and social skills building activities for people of all ages with Down syndrome. Down Syndrome Action (downsyndromeaction.org) is a grassroots organization that identifies unmet needs of people with Down syndrome and finds solutions. The Down Syndrome Association of San Diego (dsasdonline.org) aims to enhance the quality of life for people with Down syndrome and their families and has numerous community partners. Services and events are free or low-cost.

March 21, or 3/21, has been chosen to mark World Down Syndrome Day because it symbolizes the third copy of chromosome 21 in Trisomy 21, the most common form of Down syndrome.
