Sweeter than sweet it was on Feb. 15 when a celebration was held to mark the success of this year’s The Red Nose Run at the Poseidon Restaurant. The presentation of checks were given to two local The Red Nose Run charities, Semper Fi Fund and Fresh Start Surgical Gifts. Since 1992, The Red Nose Run (TRNR) has been 100 percent volunteer-organized by the Low and Slow Running Club of Del Mar.

“This was our most successful race in 26 years, generating $26,200," beamed an enthusiastic Al Bernotas, co-founder of the event. Del Mar resident and volunteer race director Anthony Valentino added, “We couldn’t do it without the loyal participation of our engaged community, in particular the generous support of the Ranglas family, owners of Poseidon Restaurant. In addition, we owe a debt of gratitude for the active engagement of our Del Mar Lifeguards.”

Representatives from Semper Fi, Sandy Hendren and Vanessa Keane, and Fresh Start representatives Christina Curtain and Kailey Chillinsky all echoed their heartfelt gratitude. “Thank you all for your months of planning and hard work to make a difference. We look forward to this holiday event every year, not only for the great success in raising funds and awareness for these two great charities, but for the great time enjoyed by all!”

When asked what makes this event so special, loyal sponsor, Tom Powers, Del Mar resident and owner of Board & Brew, responded, “My experience is of complete admiration both for the recipients and volunteers. A lot of work is put in but it comes across as not work but fun for everyone involved. Both charities are local and provide much needed resources to kids in need of facial reconstruction and life-changing services benefiting our veterans and families.”

The celebration also included a bittersweet farewell toast to Poseidon’s popular General Manager Stephan Turonbarrere who will return with his family to France to rejoin his parents. Best wishes expressed by The Red Nose Run’s Monica Valentino, “Bonne continuation a Stephan pour son retour en France. Stephan va beaucoup nous manquer!
